Guided Tour of Monkey River

To the south of Placencia lies Monkey River, a bird watcher's paradise up a tropical river. Much of Monkey River has been declared a Special Conservation Area, with howler monkeys and toucans in the forest, and manatee at the mouth of the river and iguana dotting the river bank. Monkey River TourYou'll be picked up at 7:45am at the lagoon across from Calico Jack’s and taken by boat through the mangroves dotted with bird sanctuaries. You will slowly glide up the Monkey River where lush vegetation springs from the banks.

Iguanas lounge on tree limbs and turtles sun on logs slowly easing into the water as you pass, while tropical birds glide on the currents above. You'll be able to hike over newly cut trails in the rainforest and get a close-up view of the howler monkeys that call this fascinating river home.

On the way back down the river, you’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant in Monkey River Town, a small fishing village accessible only by boat. On the way back to Placencia, your guide will go to an area where manatee are known to feed.

You can expect to be back at Calico Jack's about 3:00pm. Transportation is by boat with professional licensed guide. Lunch is included in the tour price.
