Scuba Diving in Belize

The fabulous Belize Barrier Reef stretches from Cozumel in Mexico, along the entire coastline of Belize to the Bay Islands of Honduras. It is the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere and offers countless pristine dive sites. The Barrier Reef offers access to some of the most spectacular wall dives, ocean drop-offs and amazing marine life anywhere in the world. Wall dives range from 30 to 120 feet with water visibility averaging 80 to 100 feet and water temperatures between 75 to 85 degrees year around.

Excellent scuba diving (and snorkeling) can be found in nearby and outer cayes, as well as the southern expanse of the famed barrier reef. Father offshore due east from the village of Independance are the beautiful Silk Cayes, which have received protected status as part of the Gladden Spit Marine Reserve.

Ranguana, Tarpon and Queen Caye are just some of nearly 40 options available for year round diving and snorkeling. The water looks transparent and dive sites are more pristine because they are less impacted. Brilliantly colored life beneath the sea is a phenomenon to behold. Massive amounts of soft hard corals add to the spectacle.

Diving in calm waters is enjoyed year round because of the configuration of the barrier reef as it winds its way to Placencia where the reef forms an elbow. The elbow provides numerous dive sites of interesting walls and coral ridges.

Scuba Diving Classes

Calico Jack’s Village can arrange scuba diving classes for beginners and advanced divers, based on availability and registration. Courses are offered an arm’s-throw away from our village and are among the best in the hemisphere. As scuba diving has become one of the most popular adventures in Belize, guests of Calico Jack’s Village are advised to book and register early for the best chance of acceptance into the course.

  • Scuba Diver Certification: 2-day certification course
  • Referral Course: 2 days (4 check-out dives for those who have completed their theory & pool work)
  • Open Water Certification: 3-4 days
