How far is Calico Jack's from the nearest town?

Calico Jack's is 5 miles north of Seine Bight and 12 miles north of the village of Placencia. Note that Belize is a small country with a population of 280,000, with 75 percent of that population in Belize City. Thus, a town or village is a much smaller entity in the districts of Belize as compared to the United States or Europe. (For example, Placencia Village had a population of less than 500 permanent residents in the 2000 census.)

What kind of cuisine is available in the Restaurant?

Our restaurant and bar, One Eyed Jack’s, features authentic Belizean cuisine. Reflective of its multi-cultural origins, Belize cuisine encompasses a blend of Mayan, Creole, Latin, Middle Eastern, and Indian accents. Fresh poultry, fish, vegetables, fruits, and meats are purchased daily from local markets and co-ops. Reservations are required for dinner and we ask that you place your dinner order in the morning, at breakfast time. The dinner menu changes daily, with a choice of two entrees offered. Dinner guests can also order from the lunch menu.

How big is the pool at Calico Jack's?

Our lap pool is approximately 35 feet long and 19 feet wide. It was designed for wheel chair accessibility and with the safety of children in mind. The resort next door, The Placencia has the largest pool in the country, and offer access to our guests with the purchase of a beverage or a meal.

When is the best time of year for Snorkeling or Diving with Whale Sharks in Belize?

Whale sharks can be found in Belize waters year round, but the best time to see them is during a full moon between April and July. Read more about Diving with Whale Sharks.

You say that the resort is Wheel Chair Accessible. What does this mean?

Calico Jack's Village meets most ADA standards and we have had several guests in wheel chairs stay with us.

Specifically, we have easy access to bathrooms with 36 inch bathroom door openings and large shower roll-ins (48" by 66"). The vanities are elevated with open space underneath. There is easy access to the bar, restaurant and most units. We have very stable kayaks and a large accessible lap pool. If you have any other questions on accessibility, please contact us.

When is the best time of year for fishing in Belize?

The answer depends on the kind of fishing you prefer. Many types of fish can be found throughout the year, but June through October are generally considered the best fishing months. Read more about Belize Fishing Vacations.

Must tours be booked in advance, or can we book them after arrival?

You can book tours before or after arrival. Note that most tour operators require 36 hours notification for cancellation or full or partial charges will be incurred by guests.

Should we purchase a package?

This is a largely a matter of personal preference. Some guests prefer to have everything planned in advance, while others like spontaneity. Booking a package provides you with our best estimate of the costs you will face and allows you and us to plan your trip. Note, however, that third party price increases will result in increases in package prices. For instance if the Government of Belize increases sales tax, this will be added on. Also keep in mind that unused portions of packages are not refundable.

When is the best weather, and what is the best time of the year to visit?

The best time of year to visit Belize depends on your objectives, budget, and preferences. The best weather is during what we call high season, which runs from mid November through the end of May. This coincides with our dry season. The period between June and mid November coincides with our rainy season and is called "green" or low season.

Hotel rates and airline rates are highest in dry or high season. Most resorts, including Calico Jack's, offer discounts during low season. Discounts are generally rare during high season.

Rainy season does not mean that it rains every day or during the entire season. The rains begin in May in Toledo district (southern Belize) and gradually progress north to Stann Creek, Belize, Cayo and Corozal Districts. Usually it rains for short periods and then clears. The largest and longest spells of rain are in the evening.

The mean temperature varies from 81°F/ 27°C along the coast to 69°F/21°C in the hills. The coldest month is January while the highest temperatures are experienced during the month of May.

Can I drive from Belize City to Placencia? Can I rent a car?

It is from a 3.5 to 5 hour drive from Belize international airport to Placencia, depending on the speed at which you drive and amount of time for rest stops. Automobiles can be rented at the international airport, however, there are no other drop off spots. You will have to drive it back for drop off.

Do I need to carry cash, or will I be able to use a credit card?

Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted in Belize. Merchants and vendors accept US dollars although there is a preference for local currency.

Are there ATM machines available?

There is an ATM machine at the Belize International Airport and also in the Village of Placencia.

Is internet service available?

Yes. A computer with internet access is available for use by guests. Alternatively, if you bring your own laptop, we offer wireless and wired internet connections. A nominal fee is charged for either service.

What about phone service for guests?

There is a pay phone that can be used with phone cards, and most cell phones with SIM cards work here. There are no phones in the cabanas or villas.
